How to answer interview questions well
Structure beats memorising
Strong answers are not rehearsed scripts. They come from structure and specifics. The same handful of principles carry most of the weight, whichever role or country the interview is for.
The four question types to prepare
Most interviews mix these, and a good pack covers all of them rather than leaning on one:
| Question type | What it probes | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Technical / role-specific | Whether you can actually do the job. | “Walk me through how you would design a rate-limited API gateway.” |
| Behavioural (STAR) | How you have acted in real situations before. | “Tell me about a time you disagreed with a senior colleague.” |
| Situational | How you would handle a scenario you have not met yet. | “How would you handle a deadline you can already see slipping?” |
| Culture-fit | How you work with a team and what you value. | “What kind of environment brings out your best work?” |
Answer well, every time
Use STAR for behavioural questions. Situation, Task, Action, Result. Set the scene briefly, say what you had to do, focus on what you did, and finish with the outcome. It keeps rambling answers on track.
Answer the question that was asked. Interviewers notice a dodge into a rehearsed speech. Address the actual question first, then add context. And be specific: “I redesigned the follow-up process and cut response time from two days to two hours” says far more than “we improved things”.
Prepare the classics and have questions ready. “Tell me about yourself” is a short pitch, not a life story. Frame a weakness honestly with what you are doing about it. Interviews are two-way, so a few thoughtful questions about the team, priorities and next steps signal genuine interest and leave a strong final impression.
Practise out loud. The gap between knowing an answer and saying it smoothly only closes with rehearsal, under something close to real conditions. That is exactly what the mock interview is for.
